MEMORIAL: Brenda Freese

Brenda played for the early Coastal and New Bedford Recreation Volleyball teams. She was a setter and a very competitive team leader on the court. Off the court Brenda was always there to help a friend in need with kindness and compassion. An SMU graduate, Brenda was attached to our area and loved to play volleyball and softball. She met her husband Larry at a tournament while playing for Coastal in Cederdale, at a coed tournament.

Brenda died on 7/25/96 after a difficult fight with meningitis. Each spring a tournament is held in her memory to raise money for a scholarship fund in her name. For more information contact Denise Levesque.

The Top of the Net
by Mark Larson

Dedicated to Brenda Freese
February 15, 1965 – July 25, 1996

I’ve never see the top of the net.
It mocks me, taunts me as I set
the ball for others to break its height.
It bounds my dreams. Sets my sight.

I can not touch it or break its plane,
but I know where it is, just the same.
It’s the barrier which Keeps me from my goal.
It urges me on. It defines my soul.

Sadly, my stature keeps me bound.
My job is to help others leave the ground
and achieve great things; glory and fame.
My friends share my dreams. They’re one in the same.

Although, time to time I have glimpsed above,
it’s supporting my teammates which I most love.
My goals remain the same, never lowered, and yet,
now I see the top of the net.
